Tulum them and now…..

I love this photo for so many reasons, the one in the photo is Emilio Hau, Ejidatario and a close friend of mine, and this photo somehow represents everything that I have experienced in Tulum in the last 20 years, where the great tradition comes together and Mayan heritage, along with the development and technology with which we now live, I met him 18 years ago when I bought some land from him in the ejido Jacinto Pat. Since then we have become very close friends, and there is a story with which I would like to share it. About 15 years ago there was a Jaguar that came and ate his chickens, one day Emilio decided to hunt the jaguar and went out with his rifle and 5 dogs to look for the Balam in the jungle … During that search, Emilio accidentally slipped, activating his shotgun and shooting himself in the right knee, leaving his knee completely shattered in the middle of the jungle without being able to walk … I spent a night wounded in the jungle, he and his dogs …. The next morning, the The dogs leaving Emilio alone in the jungle, they went on their way to his house, when they arrived at his house they began to bark loudly trying to call his wife Petrona, who was already nervous because Emilio had not returned to sleep … She quickly understood what the dogs wanted to show him, and he hurriedly went after the dogs, which in turn guided him to the place where Emilio lay, wounded by a bullet … Saving his leg and his life. I remember going to visit him at the hospital in Playa del Carmen, I don’t know until today why I was going to visit him and bring him food but recently he confessed that he was very grateful to me, why during that stay it seems that they weren’t going to visit him much …. Anyway … I remember that his recovery took several years, pieces of bone kept coming out of his knee, even years later …. He is very religious and very believing and with a lot of faith he endured and overcame that wound, that as he says thanks to his Lord God he saved his leg. It is one of those stories that touch and move and at the same time incredible like that time a boa constrictor ate my cat in the garden of my house … But I leave that story for another post.
